Cat: Billy Shears

Male Siamese, adopted after being rescued as a kitten from a bad situation publicized on Twitter.

Adrianne Curry and her boyfriend Todd. Adrianne is a retired model.  She was the first winner of America’s Next Top Model.

How Bad Is It?

Adrianne and Todd are sleep deprived, fighting with each other, and Todd’s work is being compromised because of Billy’s out-of-control antics.

  • Excessive meowing and yowling keeping them up, and waking them up
  • Scratching all the wood and upholstery in their historic 1922 home
  • This is gross: taking a “turd” out of the litter box and playing with it, smearing it on the floor

Physical Approach

A routine schedule with set times for playing, eating, and sleeping for Billy Shears.

Playing with him appropriately, using a toy to simulate prey that Billy can hunt and “catch,” which is what cats are hard wired to do instinctively.  For smart breeds that need more intriguing play to keep them interested, use a special treat they really like, but only at playtimes.  Use it to incentivize specific behavior like jumping up on a platform, or sitting down.

No matter how hard it is, do not respond or get up out of bed because of the cat’s meowing; do not get up and feed the cat when he starts meowing late at night or super early in the morning.  Do not speak or yell at the cat when they meow late at night or early morning.  Just stick to the feeding schedule.

Emotional Approach

Learn to see things from the cat’s perspective instead of just your own.  Learn what a cat’s needs are.  Instead of just criticizing or resenting their scratching, you might realize that their perfectly healthy, natural needs for “hunting” and “scratching” are not being met. Or rather, that they’re trying to get those needs met but have no positive ways to do so.

Holistic Approach

Spirit Essences remedies that might be helpful in this type of situation are:

Hyper Helper

This remedy is designed to help balance an animals’ out-of-control physical urges when those urges are part of hyperactivity.  Billy Shears probably wasn’t actually hyperactive.  He most likely just needed to be played with properly so he could express his hunting instinct as nature intended.  The good thing is that flower essences cannot be ‘wrong’ in a detrimental way.  If an animal doesn’t actually need a particular remedy, their body will simply not use it, and there will be no adverse side effects.  We have seen extremely hyper animals become calmer overall, after being put on Hyper Helper.

Every pet is different, and has different needs and healing responses. Some other possible Spirit Essences remedies that may be helpful in this type of situation are:

This remedy is formulated to help animals break bad habits, supporting them to stay focused, willing, and able to learn quicker.  This may help shorten the time it takes for a cat like Billy Shears to stop the habit of meowing into all hours of the night.  At the same time, however, the guardian must also do their part to train the animal with physical reinforcement, which in this case, is no physical action at all.  No payoff for meowing.  No getting out of bed to feed the cat because they’re meowing.  Training Formula may help the cat (or other animal, as this remedy is formulated for all animals) to learn the new behavior quicker.

Safe Space for Cats

This remedy was formulated to help cats establish appropriate boundaries and reduce territorial stress. It helps reassure the cat that his territory is safe and protected from intruders from within and without. The fact that Billy Shears was excessively scratching all the wood and upholstery in the home could be a sign that he may have had territorial issues. Cats use scratching as a way to mark their territory, and Billy Shears may have felt that someone or something was invading his territory. A great way to use this remedy is to mist all of the areas where the scratching occurs, to help the cat feel more secure in these areas.

Night Owl

This remedy is great for animals who are determinedly nocturnal and whose circadian rhythms are out of sync with the rest of the household. Animals with behaviors such as running laps throughout the house in the middle of the night or demanding to play and be fed at the crack of dawn can benefit with use of this remedy, along with pursuing proper behavior modification. This remedy is a great assistance in the re-training process, and promotes restful sleep. Billy Shears definitely needed to have a routine schedule implemented with set times for eating, playing, and sleeping, and in these situations Night Owl can help the animal get back in sync with the household.
