MCFH S7E01 - SAVANNAH CAT, BREAKING OUT OF HOME, COYOTES OUTSIDE
My Cat From Hell Season 7, Episode 1
Episode Title: Crazy Cat Opens Doors
Zeus is an F3 Savannah cat, which is closely related to a wildcat; adopted by guardian after previous owner couldn’t handle him and needed to rehome.
Jay is going through a difficult divorce, but is committed to his cats and treats them like his children.
How Bad Is It?
Zeus is constantly trying to escape the home and is being destructive as a result. There is an area behind the home called “Coyote Alley” where other cats have lost their lives, and Zeus puts his own life at risk every time he escapes.
- Constantly trying to escape the home; loud meowing at door.
- Destroying the door knob, window sills, etc.
- Lack of stimulation in a small home.
Cats have a primal instinct to “hunt, catch, kill, and eat.” Even your domestic house cat feels the need to do this, but cats closely related to wild cats seem to have a heightened need to perform these tasks. If a cat is constantly trying to escape his home, he is probably bursting at the seams with lack of stimulation. It can also be hard for some cats to cope with living in a small home where their natural instincts are not being satisfied.
Zeus was so obsessed with the front door (knowing that it leads to freedom) that he was literally ripping off the handle. The key to preventing this behavior was to lead him away from the door, and back towards the inside of the home. You want your cat to feel that the “jackpot” is inside the home instead of outside. A great way to lead a cat away from your front door is to put up wall shelves nearby that lead the opposite way… towards a fun agility course with tunnels! A great way to help lead them away from the door to the other side of the home is by luring them with treats; using clicker training can also help guide them away from the problem area. The key is to work towards reshaping this behavior.
Taking a cat with high physical needs for a nice, controlled walk (using a harness and leash) is a good way to burn excess energy and keep them stimulated. You may also want to check your local animal training center for extra focused training and advanced agility courses. Zeus really enjoyed his local dog training center and his energy levels were being matched by proper stimulation.
Though Jay was going through a tough time in his life, he was 100% committed to making sure that Zeus was a happy and balanced cat. When a guardian is fully committed to helping their pet, great results usually follow. Jay treated his pets as if they were his children, with unconditional love and support. Animals can feel this energy, and will react positively. Once an animal and their guardian are in tune with one another, there is no stopping them!
In addition to the above, Jackson also used Spirit Essences:
Hyper Helper is formulated to balance out-of-control energy with softer, integrated actions. This formula can help calm the hyperactive, high-strung animal, but also those who just need to instill a brief pause between thought and action. Many cats have energy levels that are not being met with an appropriate outlet, so they can become disruptive and destructive as a result. This formula, along with play time, walks, and other positive stimulation, helped to calm Zeus down and eliminate his destructive behavior. Hyper Helper is formulated for all animals, not just cats!
Every pet is different, and has different needs and healing responses. Some other possible Spirit Essences formulas that may be helpful in this type of situation are:
Training Formula is designed to help with training an animal, including the breaking of bad habits, by helping to keep the animal focused, willing, and able to learn quicker, and without excessive repetition. This formula is great to use during the training process for a cat, dog, or any animal, but the guardian must also do their part! This could have helped keep Zeus focused while training him to stay away from the front door, and possibly with faster results.
