MCFH S7E2 - CAT BITING GUARDIAN, SEPARATION ANXIETY, OVERSTIMULATION

Show: My Cat From Hell Season 7, Episode 2
Episode Title: Katrina Storms In

Cat: Gus

Gus is a male tuxedo cat that was rescued from a shelter by his guardian’s friend; he was very ill and had to be nursed back to health.

Guardian: Kirsten

Kirsten is a professional musician living in North Hollywood, California.

How Bad Is It?

Kirsten is practically in an abusive relationship with her cat and is living in constant fear. She temporarily lost vision in one eye after an attack, and her music career is at risk if one of Gus’ deep bites becomes infected.

Issues

  • Constant biting and attacking.
  • Guardian paralyzed by fear.
  • A combination of separation anxiety and overstimulation.

Physical Approach

Many animals suffer from separation anxiety, which is a feeling of excessive anxiety when they are away from someone who they have an emotional attachment with (usually their guardian). Observe their behavior - if you see that your pet regularly becomes anxious, upset, or even aggressive when you are getting ready to leave, or acts out and becomes destructive as soon as you’re gone, they may be suffering from separation anxiety. When Kirsten would begin to gather her belongings and get ready to leave home, Gus became extremely aggressive and went after her. If you are dealing with a similar situation, a great way to prevent this is by implementing morning play/hunt time; once your cat has been stimulated in a positive manner, you should be able to leave your home safely.

Overstimulation can cause your pet to become aggressive, as well. Whether it’s too much petting/attention, noise, high energy in home, or other stimulating situations, some animals get too worked up and display negative behavior. An overstimulated animal may just need some space; observe what causes your pet to become overstimulated, and make simple adjustments to prevent this from happening. When Kirsten gave Gus some personal space and did her own thing, she noticed that his aggression was greatly reduced.

Emotional Approach

When an animal is attacking and stalking their guardian, it is obviously going to put the guardian on the defense. Their body will become tense when the pet is around, and some guardians are actually paralyzed with fear of another attack. This fear can then dictate a negative reaction – more attacks! When your pet sees and feels your fear, it will cause them to also feel fearful, and they will probably attack as a result. Though it may be difficult at first, it is imperative that the guardian acts confident at all times around this animal. You cannot feed the fear. Once Kirsten became confident and comfortable around Gus, she was able to own her space and stop living in fear of another bite, and Gus definitely felt her confident energy!

Holistic Approach

IN ADDITION TO THE ABOVE, JACKSON ALSO USED SPIRIT ESSENCES:

Separation Anxiety

Separation Anxiety is formulated for the pet that gets anxious or upset when you are getting ready to leave, or acts out and becomes destructive as soon as you’re gone. This formula is designed to help relieve this anxiety, which then helps reduce or eliminate their negative behavior. When Jackson realized that Gus was suffering from extreme separation anxiety, he immediately began to administer Separation Anxiety to help Gus feel better. This formula can help all animals, not just cats!

Stress Stopper

Stress Stopper is formulated to help animals adapt and cope with unusual or stressful situations, such as thunderstorms, boarding, remodeling, visitors, or similar situations. This formula is designed to help animals feel grounded and protected during periods of short-term stress. Gus seemed to get worked up and overstimulated for short periods of time, so Jackson made sure to give him Stress Stopper during these high anxiety moments.

EVERY PET IS DIFFERENT, AND HAS DIFFERENT NEEDS AND HEALING RESPONSES. SOME OTHER POSSIBLE SPIRIT ESSENCES FORMULAS THAT MAY BE HELPFUL IN THIS TYPE OF SITUATION ARE:

Bully Solution

Bully Solution is formulated to help when one animal wants to control and dominate others, and can help the bully to relax and let others go about their business. If you observe your pet going after other animals in your home constantly, or even going after you, it may be a dominance issue. Bully Solution can reduce these urges and help your pet stop stalking others. This may have been a helpful formula for Gus because he felt the need to consistently attack his guardian throughout the day.

Jackson Galaxy's Spirit Essences™ work best when part of a more holistic program, that may include proper veterinary care, diet, behavior modification, and other holistic modalities.  Consult your veterinarian before adding any new product to your pet’s care regimen.  These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.  This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
