Fireworks and Pets: Ease Your Pet’s Fourth of July Stress

By Spirit Essences

Fourth of July brings many events and festivities, all of which usually include a sky full of fireworks. While we enjoy this tradition, many animals are extremely frightened and stressed at the sight and sound of these explosive firework displays. This holiday is the number one time of year for lost pets in the United States. According to national statistics, animal control officials across the country see a 30-60% increase in lost pets each year between July 4th and 6th. In fact, July 5th is one of the busiest days of the year for shelters. Here is the question all pet guardians should ask themselves in preparation for this noisy holiday:

How can I keep my pets safe and less stressed through the Fourth of July holiday?

Here are a few helpful tips:

  • Designate a “safe space” in the home for your pets to retreat during the festivities. This place should be calm and quiet. Close windows and blinds, and if possible, try playing calm music at a low volume to block out some of the outside noise. Keep them indoors and make sure all windows and doors are secured!

  • Distract your pets with play time and treats if they are pacing or displaying nervous behavior. You may want to buy a special new toy for this occasion, which may keep them entertained and stimulated for a long period of time.

  • Be prepared for the worst-case scenario by making sure your pet has current identification tags with up-to-date contact information. If at all possible, be sure that they are micro chipped to ensure a shelter can identify them should they lose their tags.
  • Don’t forget your Stress Stopper! Stress Stopper is formulated to help animals adapt and cope with unusual and stressful situations (fireworks, parties, visitors, etc.) and helps them feel grounded and protected. Misting Stress Stopper throughout the home and in their “safe space” is a great way to help ease their stress. Try administering Stress Stopper a few days prior to the Fourth of July weekend, and be consistent throughout the holiday.

Have a safe and happy Fourth of July holiday!
